Applications to play Wii and Gamecube games from any region and block disc updates
This page lists several applications that allow import gaming and their uses. Read the information and choose the app that seems best for you.
Configurable USB Loader supports region free gaming and automatically block updates. You can launch games from either discs or via installation to an external USB hard drive and you do not require a USB hard drive to launch from discs. Installing to the drive gives you other benefits, such as faster load times and removal of some slowdown effects in games, though. You will need to install a Custom IOS to your Wii to use a USB Loader. By setting the write_playlog=1 option in config.txt or setting Write Playlog to On in the per-game options for the game/s, your Wii will then log your game/s in the Wii Message Board play log.
Configurable USB Loader works with most games from both disc and drive including CSI: Deadly Intent.
Gecko OS is a homebrew app that has been around for a long time. It allows booting of games and setting of options (such as forcing different video modes) via menu before launching your game. It also blocks updates on both local and import games. If a certain IOS is needed by the game, Gecko OS will try to install it from the disc without installing anything else. Gecko OS does not require an additional Custom IOS to be installed. Gecko OS does not correctly update the Wii Message Board's play log and instead reports as the Homebrew Channel.
Gecko OS does not work with all games. CSI: Deadly Intent is one such game that will crash as you try to select a case.
TinyLoad is a simple homebrew app that launches the disc contained in the drive whether it is an import game or not. It ignores the update partition and simply launches the disc without any further input apart from starting the application. This makes it the fastest method to launch import discs, but the lack of a menu means it has less features than the other methods. Tinyload does not require an additional Custom IOS to be installed. Tinyload does not correctly update the Wii Message Board's play log and instead reports as the Homebrew Channel.
Tinyload does not work with all games. CSI: Deadly Intent is one such game that will crash as you try to select a case.
StartPatch is an application which modifies your system menu. It applies patches to allow region free gaming and update blocking. Once configured, the patches stay in your system menu so this method only needs to be run once, unlike the other choices on this page. You launch your games through the disc channel like any other game. Installing this means being very wary of system updates; you must remember to disable any patches before attempting an update to be safe, but the update blocking means you can't do this accidentally. You will need to install a Custom IOS to your Wii to use StartPatch. Using StartPatch, your Wii will log your games in the Wii Message Board play log.
This method does seem to work with all games. CSI: Deadly Intent works perfectly.
The following table summarizes the above information.
