Avoiding Disc-Based Updates

This page discusses how to avoid disc-based updates on games such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii. These games include an update that has a very small chance of bricking your system (this chance is the same whether you have homebrew or not). Performing this update should ensure the disc no longer ask you to upgrade your Wii when you play them normally.

If you use a USB Loader to play your games, you do not need to do this. region-free is an option to play the games from disc which will also avoid updates. If you want to play from the disc without the dangerous parts of the update, do the following:

What you should install first

  • IOS249 (may not be necessary on Firmware 3.X)
  • Upgrade to 4.2 with the Safe Upgrader.

What you need

  • SD Card
  • Internet Connection (for now)

What to download

  • The latest version of DOP-IOS Mod from this page.

Installation procedure

  1. Unzip "Dop-IOS MOD.zip" and copy the contents into sd:/apps
    • You should now have an sd:/apps/Dop-IOS MOD/boot.dol file among others.
  2. Run Dop-IOS Mod from the HBC
  3. Push A when prompted
  4. Select IOS249 as the IOS to load with D-pad and push A
  5. Push A to continue
  6. If asked to install IOS36, select cancel with B
  7. Choose IOS53 with D-pad and push A to install latest version
  8. Confirm installation of IOS53 with A
  9. Choose not to install the Sig Hash patch by pushing B
  10. Choose IOS55 with D-pad and push A to install latest version
  11. Wait for installation to complete
  12. Confirm installation of IOS55 with A
  13. Choose not to install the Sig Hash patch by pushing B
  14. Wait for installation to complete
  15. Push Home to Exit.
