I'm having a problem where as soon as i click on IOS36 it will freeze. Resulting in not being able to complete all your steps. I've tried this over and over again with the same result. I've followed the previous steps successfully and double checked that i have cIOS38_rev14. I'm using 4.1U System Menu. I basically followed this guide to softmod http://www.gbatemp.net/lofiversion/index.php/t144835-0.html then installed the cIOS38_rev14. Those are the only things i have done. I'm just trying to get USB working for Rockband. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Hmm, that is strange. Are you using the online or offline installation method? Does it only fail when choosing "Use IOS36" for cIOS222 or does it say the same if you choose one of the merging options (try IOS37 for Rock Band)? What about when trying to install cIOS223?
The only thing I can suggest right now is to try deleting the apps from your SD card and then put them back.
I fixed it. In the guide for Hermes it doesn't mention to remove the Gamecube controllers & Memory cards. That was my issue. After i removed them everything worked perfect. Thank you for getting back to me so fast though. To answer for future users though i was using online method and it was failing for everything i was selecting for 222 or 223.
First of all, thank you so much for this great wiki that you made. Everything was so clear and well explained, really appreciated. Unfortunately, I have a problem with the the hermes ios.
Here's what I have: Wii NTSC Japan kuro, with Wii sports resort and Monster Hunter tri both Japanese original discs.
What I was trying to do : Get rid of the need of switching discs by ripping the games to my external WD passport 320gb HDD.
What I've done so far : followed every step of your wiki, everything worked perfectly (homebrew channel, bootmi, customios 249, cfg usb loader…). I then ripped Wii sports resort, tried to launch it and it worked. Next, I put the MH3 disc, rip it, and try to launch the game. I get past the intro movie, but when I select start game it freezes on a black screen and high noise. Checked on google, and it seems that the problem comes from the ios 249. Many people on GBAtemp have the game working by installing the Hermes ios 222 or 223 with 35+37 merged. So I follow your tutorial on installing the hermes ios (BTW, always very easy to understand), and I tried cfg usb loader again. In the game option, I select to use the ios 223 mload, but then I launch the game, it freezes at loading 223 (with only one dot), and the wiimote is deconnected from the wii. I tried installing hermes again, many times, but always get the same thing: it seems that the wii cannot load the ios222 and 223.
So my question is : do you think it is because of the Japanese black Wii ? Did nintendo change something in it? Or is it because of the HDD not compatible with hermes ios ? Or is it my fault for being a dummy and missing a step somewhere ?
Thanks again for all your help and your great work. I hope we can find an answer easily, and who knows maybe help many other people. It seems that I am not the only person with this problem (see http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=175702 with EXACTLY the same problem than me, I almost thought it was me O_o … and also this guy for the problem with the HDD http://gbatemp.net/index.php?s=&showtopic=162628&view=findpost&p=2069066)
As I was reading your post, I was thinking you were that guy on GBAtemp too. I don't know what the issue is, although I have some suspicions. Firstly, make sure you are using a recent build of Cfg (41 right now) as the newest Hermes' IOSes only work with it. You are choosing to use IOS37 for the merge instead of what the tutorial says, right? It is safe to choose any of those options.
Try adding "ios=222-mload" or "ios=223-mload" to your config.txt file. This will make Cfg use IOS222/223 right from the start, which works better on some drives.
Finally, try uLoader, which is Hermes' Loader. That will show you if it's a problem with the IOSes themselves or some incompatibility with Cfg Loader.
Thanks for you quick answer ^_^
I checked about cfg, and it's indeed the last build (41a , but the not the 41b beta). I chose the IOS37 merged with 36 because everyone else is actually using this mode and was able to make MH tri work :s
I try added ios=223-mload , and by doing this cfg will freeze before even booting (black screen, wiimote no longer synchronized).
And I then tried uLoader (the last build), and same thing: it wont boot, freezes and loses the wiimote connection.
I also tried to unplug my usb HDD, uLoader would still not boot. It seems as if it's impossible to install hermes IOS on my wii (because it's a black japanese wii? (that's racist.gif…) ). Even if the installation completes with no problem, hermes IOS doesn't seem to be in there…
I have been looking on the gbatemp forums, but it seems that no one has a real answer yet. I also tried a few Japanese forums, and it seems like many people have the same problem (hermes ios 222 freezing black wiis). Also checked hermes' forum (the one in spanish), still no answer. This is getting annoying…
If something comes up, please keep me posted !! On my side, I'll keep looking too.
Good news everyone !
Hermes just updated his cIOS installer (4.0) and uLoader (3.0). And this time, it works perfectly with my Wii (Japanese black wii 4.1).
Here's what I did:
download the new pack from that Spanish messageboard. Launched the new cIOS installer, choose to install in 249, and installed the cios 222 (38 merged with 60) and cios 223 (38+37 also, just in case).
Tried to launch uLoader, and it didn't freeze !!! So it confirmed that this time the cios succesfully installed itself. I quickly left this program (a little bit ugly to be honest) and launched the beautiful cfg usb loader (with the gaf theme ;) ).
Tried MH3 with the mload 222 and it didnt freeze neither !! I also got past the start game option (with 249 it would freeze with an annoying sound) and was able to load my savegame and play the game !!!!
This is really a great news !! Do you think you could update your wiki by adding a little note for the new Japanese wii ? I am not the only one with this problem.
Thank you A LOT for all your help !!
I hadn't checked my e-mail yet, so didn't notice your post and I was just coming in here to post that I'd updated the Wiki with the new procedure and that it probably now works :p. Good to here it does!
And 100% up to date.
I just want to notice you thay you must encourage more people installing HERMES 222 CIOS cause normal Waninkoko IOS 247 rev14 aka CISO38rev 14 is very buggy with DualLayer ISO and simple ISO for new games.
HERMES 222 CISO solve all problem for me and it s far beter compatible with 100% stuffs than the buggy Waninkoko CISO38 rev14 (IOS 249).
I m reading your WIKI and can see that you don't insist enough to convince people installing HERMES but it is the best thing to do for now…HERMES CIOS 222 /223 rulez !!! It is not dispensable !
BTW… I LOVE IOS222 (IOS37 with IOS36 merged in)… way better than IOS249 (IOS38rev14)!
My question is what is the difference or why the change to build IOS222 or IOS223 as (IOS37 with IOS38 merged in) over the old method or version of the 'cios_installer' to make them as (IOS37 with IOS36 merged in)?
Makes me wonder if I should build my IOS223 as (IOS37 with IOS38 merged in) to compliment my current IOS222 (IOS37 with IOS36 merged in). Given me two really good options. Is IOS38 somehow much better than IOS306 that it should be in the mix?
sorry.. that last line should have been "Is IOS38 somehow much better than IOS36 that it should be in the mix?"
The v4 versions switched from using IOS36 as their base to IOS38 as there was a problem in IOS36 that made installation fail on newer Wiis (look at the other posts on this discussion page).
The v4 versions also have better drive compatibility and a few other features, so you likely will want to upgrade. Feel free to keep your v2 or v3 version as well on the other IOS position if you like.
I think I'm definitely going to prepare IOS223 as (IOS37 with IOS38 merged in) but keep my IOS222 the way it is (IOS37/IOS36) since it seems very compatible with everything. I'm on SM 4.1U as well and my SN was in the LU32 range when I started (SM 3.2U before upgrade).
I'm assuming drive compatibility, your talking about the external USB drives. Would you mind elaborating on the "few other features" as though I'm running USB Loader GX I'm thinking about trying Configurable USB Loader as an alternative and wouldn't mind knowing the ins and outs of the different IOS222/223 versions (I would assume v4 is your latest and I'm probably using the v3).
v4 is apparently a little faster and has upgrades that do stuff like removing the disc check in compatible loaders. It also apparently has better compatibility for hub-based instruments.
I do strongly suggest you try Configurable. It has better compatibility with IOS222/223v4 as it includes the latest ehcmodule and dip plugin released by Hermes. It is also a lot more stable than GX, meaning no more features with random annoying code dumps that take months to get fixed. All this coupled with the fact that Configurable is never going to insult you for testing certain settings :p.
First off, awesome guide =)
Alright so I only have a LAN adapter so I'm trying an offline installation. I've followed the steps and placed the files on my SD cards in the correct directories (I've also noticed that CIOS_Installer will create the directories itself if they aren't present … since they're the same that I had created I know that my path are good).
When I get to the step "Install Custom IOS 222 and select IOS37 merged with IOS38" I receive a "Installing from the internet Initializing network" and the system freezes there. I've unplugged my LAN adapter, even erased all my connection parameters but it didn't help.
I know that with Waninkoko's installer you had to press Left on the D-pad at one point to install from the SD card, did I miss something that simple in Hermes' ? (That would be embarrassing…)
If the files are already on your SD card, then it should find them there and install locally rather than from the Internet. There isn't an option like there is in the IOS249 installer. Perhaps you missed a file when copying them into the directory. You need to copy all the files downloaded by the NUSD. There should be about 18 or so per IOS (about 16 parts, a certs file and something else from memory).
Wow, thanks for the fast reply =)
I just found my mistake. Rather than specifying the version in the NUS downloader I used "Latest Version" so it created a file named "tmd" rather than "tmd.VersionNumber". Silly mistake =)
Thanks for your help! It's working fine now
Hello, I'm trying to install Hermes 222… I go through all of the steps, but when I get to the option to choose which IOS to use, the system freezes. Every option (IOS 38, 38+37, 38+60) freezes, so I cannot finish the installation. What is going on here?
Can you confirm I can use the cIOS installer packed with uLoader 3.1 without using the one from version 3.0c version first?
Hi. Thanks for the help, you rock! I went thru your TUT without issue, but still can't get instruments working. Was wondering if I should go back to the old method and merge 36 with 37? I am trying to launch with softchip and neogamma using disk. I can get game to fire up, but it wont see my RB Inst.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Sorry, I can't help with NeoGamma nor disc loading. These techniques are virtually useless to the non-pirate and damaging to your Wii.
Hi there, this is really a great tutorial I must say.
I have a major issue tho, when I use the 222 installer I tryed with the online method but the wii just hanged so I tryed the manual offline one.. But the merge installer still try to connect to internet.
I disabled the internet connection in the wii meny and I unplugged my adapter.. So how can I merge those files or get past that method without doing the installation?
It is well known that the Hermes' installer does not work with the adapter (and stated in the tutorial as such). To do an offline install, ensure you have the directories absolutely correct. This is not a WAD install, so there should be multiple files for each IOS and the directory names have to be exactly the same as specified in the tutorial. If it isn't finding them, then you have the wrong files or the wrong location.
I have been following the guide for getting the USB loader up and running and came across something that doesnt make sense, when I try to install Hermes IOS 222
I am running 4.2u, and used the instructions for that which have me delete IOS 249, etc. as one of the last steps and use IOS 236 when finishing the steps all wii's need.
Now I try to install IOS 222 using the Hermes instructions and the first option says: "5.Select IOS249 to perform the install with D-pad left/right and push A"….
This is the problem I can't choose 249 as I deleted it right before. My options are 254, 236 (should I use this?), or a whole series of 2 digit numbers. I realize this is probably similar to an above post, so I apologize if have not seen it.
The "Steps for all Wiis" on the IOS249 page have you install something in the IOS249 slot after the deletion of the stub that you are mentioning here. These steps involve "cIOS38 rev 15". It sounds like you never actually did this final set of steps….
Dr. Clipper —- Thanks for your response but I think I am still missing something.
this is where I am confused, the last step in the IOS 249 says for the 4.2u (nintendo official update)…
20.Now follow the remaining Steps needed by all Wiis below choosing IOS236 when asked.
So I used that when doing the steps needed by all wii's, did I miss something?
Yes, but the steps for all Wiis should have installed the real IOS249 for you. Do them again if you already did them. I've copied them below from the IOS249 page:
- Create a directory sd:/apps/ios249
- Unzip cIOS38_rev15-Installer.dol and copy it to sd:/apps/ios249
- Rename cIOS38_rev15-Installer.dol to boot.dol
- Thus, the file from the zip should now have a copy at sd:/apps/ios249/boot.dol
- If your Wii is not connected to the Internet, copy IOS38-64-v3867.wad to sd:/
- Remove all GameCube controllers and memory cards from the GameCube ports
- Mute or lower volume of your speakers (the installer has loud music)
- Insert the SD card in your Wii and start Homebrew Channel then the IOS249 app
- IOS choice depends on your Wii type. You were probably told which IOS to use at this step. If you weren't or have forgotten, use the information below. Use D-pad to select the correct IOS then press A.
- If you are updating IOS249 (i.e., this is not your first install) and you have not upgraded to firmware 4.2 since the last install, select IOS249.
- If you are updating IOS249 (i.e., this is not your first install) and you have upgraded to firmware 4.2 since the last install, select IOS250.
- If you just used one of the 4.2 methods above, use IOS236
- If you just used the 3.3 through 4.1 method above, use IOS249
- If your Wii is 3.2 or less, use the default IOS chosen by the app
- If you tried this and the installer failed with a returned -2011 error, do the steps of the 3.3 or greater section above then retry this step.
- Push A to accept the disclaimer
- With the D-pad, select network installation if you are connected to the Internet or WAD installation if not, and push A
- Let the installation complete
- Press any button to reset when completed
- You have installed IOS249 and can now move on with other steps in the tutorial.
I guess that was what the doctor ordered. I went through and did the install again and it everything is working now. Thank you for the help.
